Abstract

Lectures on Modernist Cinema by Nikica Gilić, composed of nine chapters inspired by the author’s lectures on history and theory of cinema, examines the relationship between modernism and 20th-century cinema. Modernism in cinema is perceived as a stylistic rather than a historical tendency. Whereas the first chapter outlines a theoretical framework on modernist cinema, the other chapters are centred around the key figures and movements of Croatian and world cinema. In his analysis of numerous Croatian, (post)Yugoslav, European and international films, the author demonstrates that modernism is not limited to a certain historical period, but the influence of modernist aesthetics has spread throughout the 20th and the 21st century.
